Big East Media Day news and notes

Today marked the inaugural new Big East media day as the coaches from each program and two men’s players got together to answer questions about the new conference and the upcoming season. Here is some of what came from that:

Butler was picked ninth in the preseason coaches poll this season with just Depaul coming in below the Bulldogs. This isn’t a huge surprise with all of the changes this season and the collective view of the national media and the nation in general of this season’s Bulldogs, but if there’s anything the Bulldogs are consistent about, it’s proving doubters wrong and playing to the best of their potential and surprising some people.

No Butler players were on the Big East First or Second teams, but here those are:

Player of the Year: Doug McDermott, Creighton

Freshman of the Year: Rysheed Jordan, St. John’s

First Team:

Markel Starks, Georgetown
Davante Gardner, Marquette
Bryce Cotton, Providence
D’Angelo Harrison, St. John’s
Semaj Christon, Xavier

Second Team:

JaKarr Sampson, St. John’s
Fuquan Edwin, Seton Hall
Ryan Arcidiacono, Villanova
JayVaughn Pinkston, Villanova
