The Crossroads Classic at Bankers Life Fieldhouse has been a very popular event for the last couple of years for Indiana basketball fans and basketball fans across the country. Pitting the top four collegiate basketball programs in a state with a rich tradition, it has produced some very exciting and memorable games already in its short life.
Now, Butler, Indiana, Notre Dame, and Purdue have decided to continue the series and extend contract through 2016.
Here is part of the official release:
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. — The highly successful Crossroads Classic basketball event will continue through 2016, athletic directors from the four participating schools announced today.
One of college basketball’s premier non-conference events will continue to be played at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The additional dates and matchups are Dec. 19, 2015 (Purdue vs. Butler and Notre Dame vs. Indiana), and Dec. 17, 2016 (Butler vs. Indiana and Purdue vs. Notre Dame). Purdue will serve as the host school in 2015, with Indiana taking over that role in 2016.
Not only has this been an exciting event for fans, but this has produced two very memorable games for Butler in the past two seasons.
First was the match-up against Purdue where Andrew Smith was able to put in a shot in the last minute to edge out the Boilers for a win. Then, of course, last season was Alex Barlow’s overtime heroics against Indiana that led to the Bulldogs upsetting the No. 1 team in the country.
Today’s move allows for even more memories to be made with in-state rivals with very loyal fan bases being pitted against each other every year through 2016. This is a great move for Indiana basketball in general and will continue to keep these four teams in the spotlight for a day in December.
